India's DGCA released their final report into the serious incident concluding the probable causes were:
The probable cause of Serious Incident is due to “decrease of airspeed below Vref during landing process and increase in pitch attitude resulted into the Tail Strike.”
The DGCA reported the captain (33, ATPL, 5,248 hours total, 4,974 hours on type thereof 1,583 hours in command) was pilot flying, the first officer (43, CPL, 4,932 hours total, 4,557 hours on type) was pilot monitoring. Visibility at Kolkata was 800 meters. The crew decided to carry out a dual autopilot approach with the intention of a manual landing, Vref was computed at 148 KIAS and Vapp at 153 KIAS, flaps were set to 30 degrees. The aircraft performed a prolonged flare that, from 30 feet AGL to touchdown, lasted 14 seconds, during which the pitch angle reached 9.14 degrees nose up. The aircraft touched down 1200 meters past the runway threshold, the tailskid and aft fuselage contacted the runway surface, the aircraft experienced +1.36G on touchdown. The aircraft taxied to the apron.
An aircraft mechanics inspecting the aircraft at the stand discovered damage to tail skid and aft fuselage. The damage was rated minor by the DGCA.
The DGCA analysed that the weather was above minima for the ILS approach to runway 19L.
